August homestay a success
16 Oct 2007
For twenty years, residents of Nelson and area have been opening their homes and hearts to children of Izu-Shi, Japan. Each summer, Junior High students from Izu-Shi travel to Nelson to experience Canadian culture for about ten days. This year's visit was a huge success. We had a great group of parent volunteers that organized a wide range of activities.
Host Families were introduced to their students at Lakeside Park, where they enjoyed a potluck supper. They toured City Hall and the Firehall and ate lunch at the Izu-Shi Friendship Park at Cottonwood Falls.
Canadian and Japanese youth visit the S.S. Moyie in Kaslo this summer.

Izu-Shi Friendship Garden Blossums at Cottonwood Falls
17 Oct 2007
When the Communities in Bloom visited Nelson, one of the things that impressed them the most was our community's vision for a Japanese Friendship Garden. This vision has become a reality.
Our community has worked together to create a Japanese Friendship Garden that celebrate's Nelson's twenty year Sister City relationship with the city of Izu-Shi. This project as an important step for both communities as our Japanese Sister City relationship is founded on the belief that respect and appreciation of different cultures provides a strong foundation for understanding, friendship, and meaningful relationships.

Nelson youth visit Izushi
16 Oct 2007
Nelson youth at the Shuzenji Temple
The goal of our society is to stimulate interest among Nelson youth for the Japanese Exchange Program run each year by the Izushi Friendship Society.
The interest, enthusiasm, and commitment among the Nelson youth has always been fantastic.
Each year youth travel to Izu-Shi, Japan during spring break. We are building our list of homestay families in the Nelson area for the 2008 trip. We are looking for youth aged thirteen to eighteen. Our Nelson-Izushi Friendship Society President, Bruce Walgren, stated "we could not have put together such a successful program without the dedication of many volunteers". Dawn Powell and June Spearman have developed a permanent relationship with Trafalgar Junior High School. Karen Walgren, of the Izushi Friendship Society and Trafalgar Teacher, has run the Friendship Club for four years.
The overall success of this program lies with the dedication of the Trafalgar students and parents involved. Significant fundraising for the trip is done by these youth, their families, and the Izushi Friendship Society.
